Happy Feast Day of St. Joan of Arc, especially to those SMS students in Mrs. Bishop's St. Joan of Arc Faith Family!
St. Joan of Arc was a peasant girl who lived in France during the Middle Ages. When Joan was 13 years old, she began receiving messages from God that she was to help drive the English out of France. Joan was equipped with armor, a sword, & a banner that said “Jesus & Mary” as she rode leading the French. Though victorious in battle, she was captured & kept in prison before being condemned to death. Her nickname is ”The Maid of Orleans”.
Feast Day: May 30
Symbol: Coat of arms with a sword, crown & fleurs-de-lis.
Faith Families are groups of students, each represented by a Saint & led by one of our teachers. These mixed-grade-level groups sit together at school Masses, take turns leading the liturgy, & work together for special projects & events like Catholic Schools Week, Spirit Week & our end of year HSA Picnic.

These new feathered friends are getting along fabulously! Thank you to Nature's Prize for loaning (and the DeGolier family for delivering) our Montessori classroom some "foster chicks" to pal around with the lone chick that hatched from the Montessori incubator. The students are having so much fun learning about the growing birds, and their peeps can be heard even out in the hallway!

💙🌹 Our students have been praying, coloring, painting & learning during the month of May... all about Mary! The month of May is a time for Catholics to reflect on Mary's role as a model of faith, obedience, and love for Christ, and to seek her intercession. SMS students have a special connection to our Blessed Mother, considering our school bears her name!

Kindergarten was GLOWING CRAZY today for their Glow in the Dark Neon Party! Thank you to the Moleski family for bidding on & winning this experience for their daughter and the class in our 2025 Spring for Success Silent Auction.
Students were invited to wear their best neon outfits to school and enjoy a morning of painting under black lights to watch those neon colors glow! Each student created their own painting to bring home as a great Kindergarten memory, and a glow stick dance party and special treat made the morning extra bright!

Miss Kirwan's 3rd grade class has been keeping it REAL with autobiographies! Each student read the autobiography of a famous or historical person or group, then summarized what they learned and drew a picture. Great job!

Second graders in Mrs. Wojtaszek's classroom have been learning about Memorial Day, its origins, and the importance of honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
God of power and mercy, you destroy war and put down earthly pride.
Banish violence from our midst and wipe away our tears, that we may all deserve to be called your sons and daughters.
Keep in your mercy those men and women who have died in the cause of freedom and bring them safely into your kingdom of justice and peace.
We ask this though Jesus Christ our Lord.
R/. Amen

🐝 In honor of #WorldBeeDay we thought we’d play a little game and see if you can guess where these bees are living around our campus. The first person to guess all their locations correctly will win a prize!
In the meantime, a little history on our 'bee-loved” mascot…
Why is the BEE our school mascot?
Is it because we’re located in Swormville? No - it was a nickname adopted by Sister Sheila when she was principal because of the bee’s many symbolic Christian meanings, including:
• Community - the hive represents a perfect community where each bee has a role and they work together to achieve goals.
• Perseverance - bees are hardworking and can survive environmental pressures, making them a symbol of overcoming obstacles
.
• Nature - bees represent the power and mystery of nature, and are sometimes considered guardians of the natural world.
•Other meanings - bees can also symbolize focus, teamwork, generosity, fertility, prosperity, friendship, brightness, joy, beauty, celebration, wisdom, birth and rebirth.
•Many Catholic Saints have bees as a symbol, due to their sweet eloquence in preaching, St. Ambrose is the patron saint of bees, beekeepers and even candle makers. He is often depicted with bees or a beehive – symbols that also indicate wisdom.
• Honey is viewed as a blessing of abundance and is used within the context of goodness. There are frequent references to "a land flowing with milk and honey" throughout the Bible.
... and now you know!

🥚 🐣 🐥 There's just 9 more days until the chicks hatch in our Montessori classroom!
Today students used an egg model to see what the chick looks like at this stage of it's growth. Students also learned about candling. Candling is a technique that uses a bright light to examine the development of an embryo inside a chicken egg by shining it through the shell.
