Giving Tree with Chriostmas Tree artwork with gifts

St. Mary's is in the midst of our 28th Christmas Giving Tree Season. Why do we do it?

Giving to the less fortunate at Christmas beautifully reflects the spirit of Jesus in several profound ways:

1. Embodiment of Compassion and Love

Jesus consistently taught and demonstrated love for others, especially the poor, the sick, and the marginalized. Acts of generosity during Christmas mirror His compassion:

“Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” — Matthew 25:40

Helping those in need is a direct way of living out His teachings.

2. Reflection of the Gift of Jesus Himself

Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus — God's gift to humanity. By giving to others, especially those who cannot repay us, we symbolically participate in that divine generosity:

  • Jesus was born in humble circumstances.

  • His life was a gift of grace, not earned but freely given.

Giving without expecting anything in return echoes that same spirit of grace.

3. Promotion of Peace and Unity

Jesus came to bring peace and reconciliation. Giving fosters community, breaks down barriers, and brings people together — especially across socioeconomic divides.

4. Living Out the Message of Hope

For many, Christmas can be a difficult time. Acts of kindness and giving can restore hope and dignity, reminding others that they are seen, valued, and loved — just as Jesus saw and valued every person He encountered.
