Sacred Scripture – Teen Family Lesson 2018-2019

Lesson Focus – We hear God’s Word spoken to us from the Bible at Mass! Discover where in the Bible the readings from Mass are located.

 

Before you begin – INSTRUCTIONS FOR PARENTS
  • To complete this lesson, you will need to refer to pages in the Catholic Youth Bible orange colored edition (CYB-O) OR Catholic Youth Bible  teal colored edition (CYB-T) as indicated.
  • After reviewing the lesson, you may find it necessary to explain the information to your children in language they can better understand. Please contact the FF Office at 716-688-0599 or email youth@stmaryswormville.org if you would like assistance in modifying an activity to better suite your family’s needs.

Pray!

Begin your lesson with prayer – 
  • Begin with the Sign of the Cross
  • Say this prayer together:

‘Open our ears to hear your word, O Lord!’   Amen

  • Read the scripture passage 2 Timothy 3:12-14 (CYB-O pg. 1719  PRAY IT!)  OR (CYB-T pg. 1614 WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR?)
  • End with the Sign of the Cross

 

Discover!

  • When we attend Mass, we hear God’s word spoken to us during the first part of Mass called Liturgy of the Word.
  1. God’s Word spoken to us during the 1st Reading at Mass is usually taken from one of the books of the Old Testament.

>Review the titles of the Old Testament books with your teens by referring to their Bible CYB-O pgs. 4 & 5 OR CYB-T pgs. 8 & 9 and/or listening to this song.

>Open the  USCCB Daily Readings and search the 1st Reading for this coming week. Write down the Bible verse and find it in your Bible.

2.  Find the book of Psalms in your Bible CYB- O pg. 706 and read the highlighted description OR CYB-T pg. 666 and read Quick Summary and how the Responsorial Psalm is taken from the book called Psalms.  The Psalms are normally sung during Mass.

> Open the  USCCB Daily Readings and search the Responsorial Psalm in the Daily Reading for this week.  Write down the Bible verse and find it in your Bible.

3.  Read the Introduction to the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. Refer to CYB-T pg. 1226 or  CYB-O pg.1298 and complete the activity below.

> Who wrote the four Gospels?  ____________, _____________, _____________and ____________.

> CYB-T pg. 1226- Highlight or underline how each of the Gospel writings differs in their perspective from one to another.

OR

> CYB-O pg. 1299 – (Other Background) Highlight or underline how each Gospel writings differs in their perspective from one to another.

4.  God’s Word spoken to us during the Second Reading is usually taken from one of the books of the New Testament (not from Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John).

>Open the  USCCB Daily Readings and search the Second Reading in the Daily Readings for this week. Write down the Bible verse and find it in your Bible.

5.  Discuss that God’s Word spoken to us during the Gospel Reading is taken from one of the 4 Gospels of the New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John).

> Look at this Sunday’s reading by going to the USCCB Daily Readings to reflect on the Gospel.

Challenge!  The First Reading and the Gospel Reading usually relate in some way.  How do the two readings relate this week? Discuss as a family.

 

Live!

  • As a family each time you attend Mass, review the USCCB Daily Readings site and click the date on the Mass calendar you would like to preview.
  • Challenge yourself to find each of the weekly readings in your Bible.
  • Challenge yourself to memorize the books of Bible.

Dear Lord, thank you for giving us Your Word so that we can know how to live as you want us to.  Amen
