by | Apr 16, 2018

Lesson Focus – The Eucharist –  Encounter Jesus’ True Presence at Mass

  • To complete this lesson, you will need to refer to pages in the Catholic Youth Bible orange colored edition (CYB-O) or Catholic Youth Bible teal colored edition (CYB-T) as indicated.
  • After reviewing the lesson, you may find it necessary to explain the information to your children in language they can better understand. Please contact the FF Office at 716-688-0599 or email if you would like assistance in modifying an activity to better suite your family’s needs.

Begin your lesson with prayer –
  • Begin with the Sign of the Cross

Thank you, Jesus, for giving us new life through your body and blood. Amen

  • End the prayer with the Sign of the Cross

  • There are 7 Sacraments – watch this video for a quick review of the 7 Sacraments. Note that this lesson focuses on the Sacrament of Eucharist.
  • Read Mark 14:22-25 (CYB-O pg. 1404  OR CYB-T pg. 1328). After you read the passage, focus your attention to the Catholic Connection in CYB-T or Live it! in CYB-O to further understand the passage. What does the Eucharist mean to you?
  • Watch this video on the Eucharist. Discuss as a family something new that you learned from this video. How does the explanation of the ‘real presence’ of Jesus in the Eucharist affect your understanding of the Mass and participation in the Mass?
  • Parents, discuss with your pre-teen/teen the following –

> When you are at Mass, how can you tune out the outside world and focus on the prayers of the Mass? Discuss all the distractions you experience while at Mass and come up with a plan to eliminate the distractions.

> If you miss Mass, why? List some of the reasons that cause you to miss Mass and discuss how you can change these situations so that you don’t miss Mass in the future.

  • At Mass, recognize the wonder and awe and reverence during the Liturgy of the Eucharist where the priest changes the ordinary bread and wine into the ‘Real Presence’ of Jesus and we receive Jesus’ body and blood during communion. To help understand more about receiving the Eucharist, watch this video.
Sacraments 101: Eucharist (how we receive)
  • At Mass, focus on what the priest is doing during the different parts of the Mass especially during the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
  • Share your faith by bringing a friend to Mass.
  • Get involved in our parish community!
    • Some ways to become involved is to become a lector, altar server, choir member, Eucharistic minister or be an active participant in one of the Youth Groups at our Church.

End your lesson with prayer –
  • Begin with the Sign of the Cross

Lord, amidst the business of our lives, help us to find time to spend with you in our daily lives and especially during Mass. Guide us through the distractions to an intimate conversation with you. Amen.

  • End the prayer with the Sign of the Cross
