Liturgy – Young Family Lesson 2018-2019

Lesson Focus – We gather as a family at Mass. We hear God’s Word and receive the presence of Jesus which unites us as a family of believers.

Before you begin – INSTRUCTIONS FOR PARENTS
  • To complete this lesson, you will need to refer to pages in the Catholic Children’s Bible (CCB) and/or Celebrating Eucharist Mass Book for Children (CE) as indicated.
  • After reviewing the lesson, you may find it necessary to explain the information to your children in language they can better understand. Please contact the FF Office at 716-688-0599 or email familyfaith@stmaryswormville.org if you would like assistance in modifying an activity to better suite your family’s needs.

Pray!

Begin your lesson with prayer –
  • Begin prayer with the Sign of the Cross (CCB pg. 1992)
  • Print and complete as a family the I Pray as Jesus Taught prayer sheet. Use this prayer sheet when you pray at the beginning and end of your lesson.
  • End prayer with the Sign of the Cross

Discover!

  1. There are two main parts of the Mass – 1. Liturgy of the Word (CE pgs. 6-20) and 2. Liturgy of the Eucharist (CE pgs. 21-34)
  2. Print out the We Gather at Church activity sheet and complete this as a family.
  3. Using the We Gather at Church activity sheet, refer to CE and write if the statement of special things we do at Mass happens in Part 1 or Part 2 of Mass. Use the We Gather at Church CE Reference Answers to help complete this activity.
  4. We say the prayer that Jesus taught us ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ (or ‘Our Father) during Part 2 of the Mass (CE pg. 28).
  5. Print out and complete as a family Prayer of the Church activity sheet to better understand the words of The Lord’s Prayer. Highlight or circle the word AMEN which means ‘I believe’ or ‘This is true.’

Live!

  • Take your CE booklet to Mass to help follow along with the parts of Mass or use the missals (front part of the blue hymnal in our church) found in the pews.

Pray!

End your lesson with prayer –
  • Begin prayer with the Sign of the Cross
  • Use your I Pray as Jesus Taught or Prayer of the Church activity sheet to say the Our Father prayer
  • Open your CE to page 29 and say the following prayer:

‘For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.’

  • Finish with a loud AMEN! I believe that this is true!
  • End prayer with the Sign of the Cross
