Lesson –

Five Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary

  • Suggestion: Look up and bookmark the bolded Bible passages before you begin the lesson.
  • Parents: For each of the five mysteries, with your teen, read the Bible passage, share in the discussion for each mystery, and pray.

 1.  Joyful Mystery #1 — The Annunciation (Read the Bible passage, Discuss, Pray the Rosary)

  • Bible — read Luke 1:26-38 and/or watch this video — Click Here
  • Discuss – The Angel Gabriel visits Mary, and announces that God has chosen her to be the Mother of His Son. Mary says ‘Yes’ because she trusts in God. Talk about a time when you did something special because you know it was the right thing to do, even though it may have been hard to do.
  • Rosary – Place the rosary in your hands and find the 1st large bead where this mystery would be announced. As you pray this decade of the rosary, reflect on how Mary must have felt when she found out her life was not going to happen the way she thought. How do you react when your life veers off course?

 2.  Joyful Mystery #2 — The Visitation (Read the Bible passage, Discuss, Pray the Rosary)

  • Bible — read Luke 1:39-56 and/or watch this video — Click Here
  • Discuss – Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth to tell her the good news. With the Rosary spread out on the table, find the 2nd large bead where this mystery would be announced. Mary shares her good new with her cousin, Elizabeth. Talk about a time when you couldn’t wait to share important news with someone. How did you feel when you shared this news? How do you think Mary felt when she shared the news of being pregnant with her cousin? How did the person you shared the news with react? How do you think Elizabeth felt when she heard the news?
  • Rosary – Place the rosary in your hands and find the 2nd large bead where this mystery would be announced. As you pray this decade of the rosary, reflect on how you felt when you heard or shared good news. Remember to give thanks to God for your many blessings.

 3.  Joyful Mystery #3 — The Nativity (Read the Bible passage, Discuss, Pray the Rosary)

  • Bible — read Luke 2:1-20 or Matthew 1:18-25 and/or watch this video — Click Here
  • Discuss – Jesus is born in Bethlehem and angels appear to shepherds to tell them the good news! Parents, tell your child about the day they were born and how you announced their birth to friends and family.
  • Rosary – Place the rosary in your hands and find the 3rd large bead where this mystery would be announced. As you pray this decade of the rosary, reflect on the importance of protecting the unborn and newly born babies.

 4.  Joyful Mystery #4 — The Presentation (Read the Bible passage, Discuss, Pray the Rosary)

  • Bible — read Luke 2:22-38 and/or watch this video — Click Here
  • Discuss – Mary and Joseph take baby Jesus to the temple. Parents, tell your child what it was like to attend Mass or any other event when your child was a baby. What was the reaction of the people who saw your child for the first time?
  • Rosary – Place the rosary in your hands and find the 4th large bead where this mystery would be announced. As you pray this decade of the rosary, reflect on how difficult it can be to attend something for the first time, meeting new people and experiencing new things. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you courage and grace to handle these experiences with ease.

 5.  Joyful Mystery #5 — The Finding of Jesus in the Temple (Read the Bible passage, Discuss, Pray the Rosary)

  • Bible — read Luke 2:41-52 and/or watch this video — Click Here
  • Discuss – Joseph and Mary thought Jesus was lost, but he was found asking questions in the Temple. Talk about a time that you did God’s work (service to someone or attending a faith function) that interfered with family life or your personal life. Discuss how you can incorporate God’s work into everyday life and include the whole family.
  • Rosary – Place the rosary in your hands and find the 5th large bead where this mystery would be announced. As you pray this decade of the rosary, reflect on the importance of doing God’s even when it presents a challenge to you.

Live!

  • The Joyful Mysteries remind us to be glad for all the good things we have in life. Parents, share with your teen good memories and experiences from your childhood and from theirs.
  • Parents, if you have not already prayed the rosary, consider praying a decade (10 beads) of the rosary with your teen to remind us of the joyful events of Jesus’ life.
  • Parents, these words and phrase remind us of the Joyful Mystery: Humility, Love of Neighbor, Obedience, Joy. Choose one and discuss how it relates to your family’s life.
