Conscience – Young Family Lesson 2018-2019

Lesson Focus – Discover how the Beatitudes help us make good choices and live as disciples of God.

Before you begin – INSTRUCTIONS FOR PARENTS
  • To complete this lesson, you will need to refer to pages in the Catholic Children’s Bible (CCB) as indicated.
  • After reviewing the lesson, you may find it necessary to explain the information to your children in language they can better understand. Please contact the FF Office at 716-688-0599 or email familyfaith@stmaryswormville.org if you would like assistance in modifying an activity to better suite your family’s needs.

Pray!

Begin your lesson with prayer –
  • Open the CCB to pg.1454 and read Matthew 5:1. Have your children gather around you as you read this verse out loud and help your children relate to the setting being similar to what Jesus describes in this Bible verse.
  • Begin the prayer with the Sign of the Cross (CCB pg. 1992)
  • Say the following prayer:

‘Dear Jesus, open our ears to hear your words so that we may learn how to be happy.’   Amen

  • End the prayer with the Sign of the Cross

Discover!

  1. Depending on the age of your children, print out the Happy Are Coloring Sheet (have your children color the Beatitude star as you read the Bible passage) and/or True Happiness Activity Sheet and complete this with your children.
  2. Explain to your children that the Beatitudes are like signposts that point us in the right direction. They help us make choices that lead to happiness. Depending on the age of your children, print out the Choosing the Right Path and/or Signposts Lead Us to Happiness Activity Sheet and complete this with your children.

Live!

  1. Read ‘Understand It!’ on CCB pg. 1457 and paraphrase this to your children. Have your children underline or highlight the words HAVE MERCY, PURE OF HEART, & WORK FOR PEACE in their Bible.
  2. Complete the ‘Live it!‘ activity found on CCB pg. 1457.
  3. Write a Beatitude on each day of your wall calendar. Ask family members to live that Beatitude throughout their day. At home each night, discuss how living the Beatitudes made a difference.
