Catholic Principles & Social Teaching – Teen Family Lesson 2019-2020

Lesson Focus – God created humans in His image and He asks humans to care for ALL He created – that includes ourselves!

Before you begin – INSTRUCTIONS FOR PARENTS
  • To complete this lesson, you will need to refer to pages in The Catholic Youth Bible.
  • After reviewing the lesson, you may find it necessary to explain the information to your teen in language they can better understand. Please contact the FF Office at 716-688-0599 or email familyfaith@stmaryswormville.org if you would like assistance in modifying an activity to better suit your teen’s needs.

Pray!

Begin your lesson with prayer  –
  • Begin prayer with the Sign of the Cross
  • Parent and teen, read Genesis 1:26-27
  • End the prayer with the Sign of the Cross

Discover!

  • Parents, discuss with your teen that God created humans in His image and wants us to take care of our ourselves physically and spiritually. God also put us in charge of caring for the world He created. Complete the following with your teen to better understand this important message.

1.  Teen – highlight or underline the Scripture passage that you read in the opening prayer Genesis 1:26-27.

2.  Parent & teen – read and discuss the activity found in The Catholic Youth Bible Growing in Faith: Being Real (pg. 23)

3. Teen – highlight or underline the Scripture passage 1 Corinthians 3:10-17.

4.  Parent & teen – read and discuss the activity found in The Catholic Youth Bible – Growing in Faith: A Firm Foundation (pg. 1516).

Live!

  • As a family – discuss ways to ‘care for your temple’. Besides building up the foundations in our spiritual relationship with God, scripture challenges us to honor the gift of our bodies as a temple of the Holy Spirit by caring for ourselves physically as well. Make a list of how you will care for your body (eating healthy, doing more exercise, getting more sleep) and live out these actions as a family, encouraging each other to do your best.

Pray!

End your lesson with prayer –
  • Begin prayer with the Sign of the Cross
  • As a family, pray together:

We are God’s temple. We are rich, we are poor; we are young, we are old, we are male, we are female, we are sick, we are healthy, we are all races and cultures.

O God, fill us with your spirit of unity. Abolish the destructive forces of hate: prejudice, racism, physical and verbal abuse, abortion, murder, and euthanasia. Break down the barriers that divide us. Fill us with your loving spirit and an appreciation for the value of each and every life.

  • End prayer with the Sign of the Cross
